Review: Omni Mont-Royal in Montreal

This past Memorial Day weekend, while friends and family were heralding in the start of summer with BBQs and lazy afternoons by the pool, I was practicing my French while exploring the charming cobblestone streets of Montreal, Canada.

I’ve been eager to visit Montreal for years, and I was excited to be able to use the Omni Mont-Royal as my home-base throughout the weekend.

The Omni brand has always held a special place within the “best of the best” superlatives of my travel memories. When I was 12, I stayed at the Omni Cancun Hotel and Villas with my family. It is the first hotel experience that I can remember in vivid detail, where the exceptional hotel ambiance, service, location and amenities were as exciting as the destination.

My latest Omni experience at the Omni Mont-Royal lived up to every great memory I’ve been holding on to… and then some! This becomes increasingly less surprising when you consider that this is the very hotel that Quebec-born Celine Dion chose for her lavish wedding reception.

With newly-renovated rooms and a soon-to-be-complete full renovation of the lobby level, this four star hotel in the heart of downtown Montreal is modern, elegant and central. The perfect “home away from home” for any traveler to Montreal.

The Rooms

The Master Bedroom

The Master Bedroom

For me, the most important part of any hotel experience is the room. And my room at the Omni Mont-Royal was one of the best, if not the best, rooms I’ve ever stayed in with 514 square feet of decadent comfort. A suite with a master bedroom, a large living room area with a pull-out sofa, a stellar view of the Mont-Royal mountain and two (yes TWO!) beautiful and gigantic bathrooms.

The newly transformed rooms are full-on luxury. The style is contemporary with pops of glamor—such as gorgeous French doors separating the bedroom from the living area and bathrooms with floor to ceiling Italian marble. The glamorous touches are fit in seamlessly with just enough panache to make the rooms (and you as a guest) feel special.

But, as luxurious as it all is, the overall effect is one of comfortable luxury to make you feel like you’re in a home away from home. I felt no hesitation at putting my feet up on the coffee table, walking around barefoot on the soft carpeting or stretching out on the cozy couch. After long days full of sightseeing, it was a treat to come back to my room and relax.

Mom and I enjoying some champagne in the chic living room- check out those French doors!

The Gym, Pool and Spa

Montreal is known for its top notch food, so for those travelers looking to counteract the calories with some cardio, the Omni Mont-Royal has you covered! The hotel is equipped with a huge 6,600 square foot fitness center- comprising of multiple rooms with state of the art equipment, weights, sauna, steam room, TVs and towels… everything you need to stay fit on the road. There’s even a separate aerobics studio dedicated for yoga and Pilates devotees.

If lounging by the pool is more your style, the hotel also has an indoor whirlpool and an outdoor “urban pool” situated on the fitness level, which puts you above the street noise of Rue Peel.

The spacious pool

But the pièce de résistance had to be the beautiful and serene AmeriSpa, one of the largest urban spas in Montreal. Here, I had the single best pedicure of my life. There were so many wonderful treatments to choose from, but after a long weekend of exploring Montreal by foot, my tootsies definitely needed a little love. So, I selected the Haute Couture pedicure– 80 minutes of bliss that included a traditional and hot stone massage, exfoliation and shea butter treatment before I got the colorful coating of my choice. It was a bit indulgent but two weeks later, my feet are STILL soft. (Considering that I’ve been breaking in new shoes, that’s really saying something!)

The Service

Upon arriving, we were greeted warmly by the French-speaking doorman. He helped us with our bags and the car valet service, then stayed with us through check-in to make sure our bags were promptly delivered to our rooms. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful, and there was always an abundance of apples in the lobby for us to grab on the go for a quick snack. (Loved that perk!)

I also had the opportunity to spend some time with the esteemed and knowledgeable concierge as I picked his brain to help find the perfect destinations to achieve my Montreal must-dos, including where my best choice would be to achieve my 55 Places Bucket List item “Have a cappuccino at a café in Vieux-Montréal. For that, he recommended Olive et Gourmando— it was perfect and everything that I could have hoped for (more to come on that experience in a separate post!).

At my insistence, he also recommended the best nearby place to try poutine – the greasy spoon joint La Banquiese –  before dropping his air of sophistication just the slightest to describe with glee how he best likes to eat the French fry/gravy/cheese curd delicacy: Nibbling on some of the cheese right away while it still is “squeaky” before mixing it all together so the cheese melts. (A great tip, BTW.)

To finish the trifecta of concierge helpfulness, he also helped me get last minute reservations to one of the most popular restaurants in town, L’Express. Yep, the man was magic!

TIP:If you are a member of the free Omni Select Guest rewards program, you’re entitled to immediate perks like free in-room WiFi, free shoe shining and clothes pressing and –my favorite- free morning beverage room service (with good, strong coffee- and lots of it- at whatever time works best for you.) The rewards programs is absolutely free and signing up is super simple. Lots of goodies make this the best loyalty program that I’ve ever been a part of.

The Bottom Line

I’m a traveler that likes to stay in central places that have a style and approachability that gels with the surrounding city. For this and the many reasons listed above, the Omni Mont Royal was the perfect hotel for me.

And, with the pool, spa, urban locale and array of suites, the Omni would be a great choice for families, business travelers and, my personal favorite– gals on a girlfriend getaway. (TIP: Snag two adjoining suites to create one ginormous villa with lots of space for lounging and primping!)

I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again, and given the current renovations of the lobby, “Alice” bar and Le Petit Opus bistro restaurant, the hotel should be full-on five star when complete. I’m looking forward to visiting again to see the grandeur in person.

The Omni Mont-Royal Hotel is located at 1050 Rue Sherbrooke Ouest in Downtown Montreal.
